Built for Canadian Homes and Businesses

The same system that offsets a 3,000 sq ft home works just as well as a property improvement for Canadian commercial buildings — and for many commercial property types, the federal incentive picture is currently stronger for businesses than for homeowners (see below).

Ideal commercial applications include:

  • Gas stations & convenience stores — offset high refrigeration and lighting loads, keep operations running through outages
  • Banks & credit unions — backup power for security systems and continuity of operations
  • Drive-thru restaurants & retail pads — reduce peak-demand charges, stay operational through grid interruptions
  • Office buildings — meaningful offset against commercial electricity rates
  • Industrial buildings — support equipment loads, reduce peak-demand exposure
  • Apartment buildings — offset common-area load and provide a genuine tenant amenity, including EV charging support

Incentives & Rebates — What's Actually Available in Canada in 2026

Canada's incentive structure works differently than the U.S., and it's changed significantly in the last two years. Here's the accurate current picture.

For Homeowners

Canada does not have a federal income tax credit for residential solar. The two federal programs homeowners previously relied on have both closed to new applicants: the Canada Greener Homes Grant (up to $5,000) closed in February 2024, and the interest-free Greener Homes Loan (up to $40,000) closed October 1, 2025. The federal government's current replacement program targets low-to-moderate-income households specifically and isn't a general solar rebate.

What's still available to homeowners is provincial, and it varies a great deal by province:

  • Some provinces offer direct rebates per kW or kWh installed
  • Some offer 0%-interest or low-interest financing programs
  • Net metering is available in most provinces, though compensation structures differ
  • A few programs are mutually exclusive with net metering — worth checking before assuming you can stack both

See your province's page below for the specific programs available where you live.

For Businesses

The federal Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit provides a 30% refundable credit on the capital cost of eligible clean-energy property, including solar and battery storage — available to corporations and incorporated entities, not individual homeowners. This can be paired with accelerated Capital Cost Allowance (CCA Class 43.1/43.2) depreciation treatment, meaningfully improving the payback timeline for a commercial property.

For gas stations, retail buildings, offices, industrial properties, and incorporated apartment/rental operations, this is currently the strongest federal incentive available in Canada — stronger, in relative terms, than what's currently available to individual homeowners.

Charging Solar is not a tax advisor. Eligibility, credit amount, and CCA treatment depend on your specific business structure and project facts. Confirm your eligibility with a qualified Canadian tax professional or accountant before purchasing.
